For years, we’ve been hearing about dogs getting sick, sometimes fatally, from tainted chicken jerky treats. Finally, some of these treats are being pulled from store shelves. Nestle Purina is voluntarily recalling all of its Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch treats.
According to the company, a New York regulatory agency found trace amounts of antibiotic residue in tested samples of treats. The antibiotics found in the treats are approved for use in China and some European countries but not in the United States. Nestle Purina is saying that they are recalling these treats because of “inconsistent regulation” and that it is not connected to the Food and Drug Administration's ongoing investigation of their products.
Here’s a statement from a company representative:
"All of us at Waggin' Train care deeply about pets and their owners, and the quality of our products is of the utmost importance," said Nina Leigh Krueger, President, Waggin' Train LLC. "Waggin' Train has served millions of pets and their owners very well. In the final analysis, our Company and our loyal consumers must have total confidence in the products we sell and feed our pets. Once we understand and determine how to comply with the technicalities of different regulatory frameworks, we will work with all appropriate parties to define the best way to supply the market."
According to the Waggin’ Train website, the antibiotics found in their treats do not present a threat to people or pets. As we’ve reported before, there’s something in their chicken jerky treats that has been making dogs sick for years. We can only hope that this move will prevent future suffering by dogs and their families.
