Diamond Dog Food Recall Spreads Salmonella To Other Brands
The voluntary recall from Diamond Pet Foods started with 1 line of foods (click here for the original story). Then it spread to 2 other Diamond brands, and now is affecting all foods manufactured at the same plant.
Why It’s Being Recalled
Four bags of dry dog food made by Diamond in their Gaston, South Carolina plant tested positive for salmonella contamination. As a precaution, Diamond is recalling their foods manufactured at that plant in case they came into contact with the contaminated bags. Other companies who also manufacture there are recalling their foods from that plant as well.
Salmonella affects pets and humans alike. Unconfirmed reports indicate several people have fallen ill from salmonella connected to the recall. (Update: As of July 19, 2012, reports indicate 49 people have fallen ill in connection to this recall.) Diamond says that they are working with the Center for Disease Control but cannot comment further due to patient confidentiality. Individuals with weaker immune systems, such as children under 5, patients undergoing cancer treatment, patients with HIV/AIDS, and organ transplant recipients, are at higher risk of getting sick if they come in contact with salmonella bacteria. So far, no dogs have been reported to have become sick as a result of the food.
What’s Being Recalled
The following brands are part of the Diamond recall:
• Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
• Country Value
• Diamond
• Diamond Naturals
• Premium Edge
• Professional
• 4Health
• Taste Of The Wild
If you have dry dog food from one of these brands, you need to check the production code listed on the bag to see if your bag is one of the affected products. Look for:
• A “2” or “3” in the 9th or 10th digit of the production code, AND
• An “X” immediately after the “2” or “3”.
This is what the production code looks like:
The “Best Before” dates will be between December 8, 2012 and April 7, 2013. The “Best Before” dates in the images above are NOT the only ones affected. Any date between 12/8/12 and 4/7/13 with those production codes are affected.
UPDATE (05/21/12): Diamond has expanded the recall to include Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Dog Lamb & Rice Formula. Affected bags are in sample sizes, 6 pound, and 18 pound sizes. If your bag has the following production codes and best-by date, your bag is recalled:
-
DSL0801, 08/26/12
-
DSL0801, 09/27/12
-
DSL0801, 10/18/12
-
DSL0801 sample (no best-by date)
Canned food from these brands has not been affected.
Where These Foods Were Sold
The following is a list of states in the US and Canadian provinces where Diamond Pet Foods knows the food was distributed and sold. The food may have been distributed further without Diamond’s knowledge, so just because your state is not listed doesn’t mean you’re safe. Check the codes on the bag.
States where Diamond is sure the food was distributed are Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, lllinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Canadian provinces where Diamond is sure the food was distributed are British Colombia, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick.
Other Brands Made At The Same Plant
Diamond and its associated brands are not the only companies that manufacture dog food at the South Carolina plant where the salmonella was found. None of the brands below have had food from the plant test positive for salmonella.
WellPet is recalling its Wellness Complete Health Super5Mix Large Breed Puppy food as a precaution. The recall affects 15 and 30 pound bags, as well as 5-oz. sample bags with best by dates of 1/9/13-1/11/13.
Canidae is recalling 4 formulas of dry dog food. They are Canidae Dog Dry Dog Food, All Life Stages; Canidae Dog Dry Dog Food, Chicken Meal & Rice; Canidae Dog Dry Dog Food, Lamb Meal & Rice; and Canidae Dog Dry Dog Food, Canidae Platinum. These foods were distributed in Florida, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee, but may have been distributed to other states as well. We will update this page when Canidae confirms this recall. To tell if your bag of Canidae is affected, look in the production code for a number "3" in the 9th or 10th digit AND an "X" in the 11th digit with a best-by date from 1209/12 through 01/31/12. Canidae says it will look similar to this:

What To Do If You Have Recalled Food
There are several steps you can take to prevent possible salmonella contamination in your home. Diamond recommends the following:
• Stop feeding recalled food to your dog immediately.
• Dispose of the food immediately.
• Wash your hands with soap and water after handling the recalled food.
• Clean anything the food may have touched (such as bowls, floors, measuring cups) with a mild bleach solution.
Know the signs of salmonella poisoning in humans and dogs. Symptoms for both humans and dogs include fever, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. If you or someone in your household experience these symptoms, contact your doctor. If your dog shows any of these symptoms and has eaten this food, contact your veterinarian.
