In March of this year, a few kinds of pig ear dog treats were recalled for potential salmonella poisoning. Now, more brands and packages have been added to the list.
The FDA has listed recalls of pig ear treats by brands Digger’s Natural Chews, PrimeTime, KC Beefhide, and Keys Manufacturing Company. Salmonella is dangerous to pets who eat these treats and to people to come in contact with them.
If you have pig ear treats by any of these manufacturers, return them to the store of purchase for a full refund. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the treats, and thoroughly wash any surfaces where they’ve been. Keep an eye on your dogs for symptoms of salmonella. Symptoms include:
• Lethargy
• Fever
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
If your dog has eaten these treats and has these symptoms, contact your vet immediately.
For questions about the recalls, you can contact the manufacturers at the following numbers:
• Digger’s Natural Chews: 800-445-6347
• PrimeTime or KC Beefhide: 913-342-5010
• Keys Manufacturing Company: 217-465-4001
Please take a look at your pantry, get rid of these treats if you have any, and spread the word to other dog lovers.
UPDATE - June 13, 2011 - Another brand has joined the voluntary recall. This time, it's Bravo! Pig Ears Chews, also for potential salmonella contamination. The affected treats are the 50-count box. To know if your box of treats is affected, look on the package for Product Code 75-121, Lot #12-06-10. If you have these treats, return them to the store where you bought them for a full refund. You can contact Bravo! with any questions you have by calling 1.866.922.9222.
